Hey Alex and Magic Patterns team,
I'm Gary Sheng, and I want to help you spread the magic.
I've spent my career building communities around transformative technology and making complex tools feel accessible. I served as a tech lead at Google Cloud and recently graduated top of my class from Gauntlet AI. I'm a beneficiary of AI-assisted development tools (I use Cursor daily), and I know firsthand what it feels like when software creation goes from painful to magical.
Why I'm the Right Fit
I build communities that people actually want to be a part of. I organized Edge City Denver 2024—a seven-day developer event with 3,000+ attendees and 4.6/5 satisfaction. I designed programming, recruited speakers, and built the buzz that made it the talk of ETHDenver. Our Telegram became THE nerve center of the entire conference.
I love communicating things clearly so people can take action. I'm a Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient for social impact. I've written everything from technical documentation to thought leadership that people actually read. My writing has personality because I care about making things clear and exciting.
I'm obsessed with users. I grew Gitcoin Passport from 200,000 to 1M users by listening to what developers actually needed and translating complex Sybil resistance concepts into something they wanted to use. I talk to users constantly because that's where the insights live.
I spread magic through video and content. I've filmed and uploaded hundreds of videos across social media platforms—I have about 130,000 followers on my TikTok. I know how to package content for YouTube, LinkedIn, X, and TikTok. I also know how to work with professional editors and lead video teams. I've created documentation, tutorials, and guides that made complex multi-venue events navigable for thousands. I know how to make technical concepts feel inevitable rather than intimidating.
I'm comfortable with no playbook. I co-founded Civics Unplugged and trained 2,000+ Gen Z civic innovators across 70+ countries. We made it up as we went, achieved financial sustainability, and built something that actually mattered. When COVID hit, we pivoted to become one of the first fully digital civic education programs within weeks.
I partner with influencers and creators. I brought in hundreds of early users to Naval Ravikant's Airchat. I've worked with The Rock (he shouted us out), Andrew Yang, and crypto/AI thought leaders. I know how to build authentic relationships that drive adoption.
What I'll Do
I'll produce videos that make Magic Patterns feel like actual magic. I'll nurture your community not with canned responses but with genuine engagement. I'll talk to users every day and translate their needs into product insights. I'll collaborate with your engineering and product teams as their user advocate. I'll develop your brand through community engagement that people actually want to participate in.
Most importantly, I'll optimize for action. I move fast. I trust data. I'm obsessed with customers. I insist on high standards. And I have fun doing it.
This role is exactly the intersection of everything I love: AI, building community, making complex tech accessible, and moving at startup speed.
